Success Story

The client, a prominent Spanish Energy and Petrochemical multinational, operates a chemicals division that produces essential ingredients for everyday items like soaps and food packaging.

When the client’s plant required maintenance and the replacement of reverse osmosis membranes, they faced the decision of switching from cellulose acetate to new aromatic polyamide thin-film-composite membranes. This transition held potential risks for their production processes.

To address this challenge, NSI Mobile Water Solutions deployed a  reverse osmosis unit MORO 4X25T, ensuring a treated water capacity of up to 100 m3/hr with a conductivity level below 20 µS/cm.

By implementing our solution, the client was able to guarantee both the quality and quantity of water throughout the membrane replacement process, mitigating production disruption.

Reverse Osmosis FAQs

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses high pressure and a semi-permeable membrane to separate and filter out unwanted molecules and large particles, such as contaminants and sediments like chlorine, salt, and dirt from water. It’s used to remove contaminants and impurities like bacteria, dissolved solids, and salt from water. Reverse Osmosis technology is widely used in various industry applications to produce high-quality water.

One of the primary advantages of a containerized reverse osmosis system is its “plug and play” characteristic, either trailer-mounted or containerised, to ensure easy transportation and deployment. RO systems offer scalability to meet varying water treatment demands. RO system is less hazardous waste water. This is due to not requiring any harmful chemicals within the process of producing the permeate (pure water).

NSI Mobile Water Solutions offers a range of assets featuring mobile brackish water purification equipment, utilizing highly efficient reverse osmosis technology. These assets efficiently remove dissolved salts, organic and inorganic molecules, and particles from water through a semi-permeable membrane.

The MODF range includes stainless steel disc-and-drum filters, available on skid mounts or trailers. These adapt with diverse filtration screens for various applications, providing an efficient, flexible treatment solution with a small footprint.

Success Story

Our client, a nuclear decommissioning company contracted by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, faced the challenge of decommissioning a UK power station that had ceased operations and was being defueled. This facility previously consumed 910 m³/day of demineralized water, which had decreased to 26 m³/day after power generation ceased. The on-site demineralization plant was oversized and costly to maintain.

Our solution involved providing a MODI 15000T trailer-mounted mobile demineralization plant, offering ion exchange demineralization at a reduced flow rate. Once the ion exchange resins were depleted, the MODI 15000T trailer was returned to MWS’ central media regeneration station, eliminating the need for chemicals and effluent disposal. This approach reduced costs by 50% compared to operating the on-site plant and allowed for the early removal of the redundant demineralization plant, enhancing operational efficiency.

Water Deionization FAQs

Deionization is a water treatment process that removes mineral salt contaminants from water. Specifically, the purification process removes cations, such as calcium, copper, iron, sodium ions, and anions such as bromide and chloride. Deionization systems utilizes ion exchange resins to effectively remove dissolved solids from water and purify potentially contaminated water. The resins bind with any mineral salts in the liquid to separate them from water, so that only clean water leaves the tank.

Mobile water deionization systems use ion exchange resins to remove dissolved solids from water. Chambers are filled with ion resin and separated by ion-exchange membranes. Water flows through a bed of resin beads that have positive or negative charges. Positively charged resin attracts and traps negative anions, while negatively charged resin attracts and traps positive cations. The resin then releases hydrogen ions in exchange for the cations and hydroxide ions in exchange for the anions. The hydrogen and hydroxide ions then combine to form water. All that remains is water molecules, which is why deionized water has a reputation for being one of the purest forms of water.

Distilled water is not the same as deionized water. Distilled water is water that has been heated to its boiling point, causing any impurities to evaporate. The resulting vapor is then condensed back into a liquid, leaving behind any contaminants. This process of distillation can be used to produce drinking water, as well as water for other purposes.

Water that has been distilled is completely free of contaminants and minerals, making it ideal for use in pharmaceuticals or by people with sensitive skin or allergies. Because of its purity, distilled water can be stored for an extended period of time, ensuring safe water for use.

Deionized (DI) water is distilled water from which all contaminants have been removed. This results in the removal of dissolved minerals and salts. Deionized water is not the same as distilled water, which has had all its impurities removed through a distillation process.

Most commercial and manufacturing industries use deionized water to avoid the potential of sediment buildup that could affect the longevity of their equipment. And because DI water does not conduct electricity, it can be used safely in electrical applications.

Ultrafiltration FAQs

Water ultrafiltration (UF) is a water treatment process that uses a semipermeable membrane to filter out large suspended solids, bacteria and viruses from water, ensuring removal of particles as small as protein macromolecules.

Suspended solids and high-molecular-weight solutes remain on one side of the membrane, the retentate side, while water and low-molecular-weight solutes filter through the membrane to the permeate side.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a membrane filtration process that uses pressure to force water through a semipermeable membrane. This membrane has specific pore sizes that allow water molecules and smaller dissolved substances to pass through, while larger particles like bacteria, viruses, and colloids are retained. Ultrafiltration offers a balance between effective contaminant removal and mineral retention, making it a valuable tool for water treatment. It is particularly effective in removing larger particles while preserving essential minerals, often providing better purified water.

Mobile water ultrafiltration(UF) systems offer a range of benefits that make them a valuable option for various applications. Mobile UF units are unique to traditional, stationary water treatment facilities because they can be deployed to diverse locations to present timely water treatment services. These assets by NSI Mobile Water Solutions are available within a container, which can be delivered on site either as a wheel or non-wheel-based solution.

Degassing FAQs

Water degassing is a process that removes dissolved gases, mainly oxygen and carbon dioxide, from water. This process is essential in various industrial processes, as it significantly improves water quality and system efficiency. By reducing dissolved gas levels, water degassing mitigates corrosion, and enhances the overall water purity.

Vacuum Degassing: This method involves reducing the pressure on the water, causing dissolved gases to vaporize and escape into the atmosphere. It’s a simple and effective method, often used in smaller-scale applications.

Thermal Degassing: This method involves heating the water to increase the solubility of dissolved gases, making them easier to remove. The heated water is then cooled, causing the gases to release. It’s a widely used method in various industries, especially those requiring high-purity water.

Membrane Degassing: This method utilizes specialized membranes that selectively allow gas molecules to pass through while retaining water molecules. It’s a highly efficient method for removing specific gases, such as oxygen, from water. It’s particularly useful in applications where low gas concentrations are required.

Ultrasonic Degassing: This method uses high-frequency sound waves to create tiny bubbles in the water. These bubbles rise to the surface and burst, releasing dissolved gases. It’s a relatively new method, but it’s gaining popularity due to its effectiveness and efficiency.

Chemical Degassing: This method involves adding chemicals to the water to react with dissolved gases and form insoluble compounds that can be removed by filtration or settling. While effective, it’s important to choose chemicals carefully to avoid introducing contaminants into the water.

Ensuring the protection of essential system components is crucial for smooth plant operations and durability. Membrane degassers provide the advantage of reducing oxygen saturation levels in feed water to less than 10 ppb, all without resorting to chemical usage. Our container-installed membrane system offers a flexible, rapid, and effective solution for removing both oxygen and carbon dioxide from process water.

Choose from our REMOX and MODA mobile degasification solutions tailored to your precise requirements. These assets by NSI Mobile Water Solutions are available in both containerized and skid-mounted configurations.
