Tank filling during the commissioning of a new district heating facility.
A municipal utility company in Germany provides electricity, gas, water, and heat to its region. An Austrian engineering firm was tasked with planning, constructing, and filling a district heating storage facility for the utility company. Mobile Water Solutions was subsequently engaged to handle the initial tank filling on behalf of the engineering company.

The Challenge
For the utility company, a 40,000 m³ water storage tank was a vital component of their future district heating plan. In coordination with an operational boiler, surplus electricity from the network would be used to heat water and store it temporarily in the heat store. The water is heated to 115 degrees Celsius and stored in the tank for delayed release. This hot water, stored in the heat store, ensures the supply of over 70,000 district heating customers in the area for up to eight hours, even at peak demand. However, the engineering company faced challenges in completely filling the heat store within the required six-week timeframe.
The Solution
To address this challenge, a mobile water treatment unit was deployed on-site for approximately six weeks, providing the necessary capacity to fill the new tank. The solution included:
- MORO 4x 25T (in double pass): Reverse osmosis on a mobile trailer, reducing the salinity of the city water by over 97%.
- REMOX 50 C: Mobile degassing to reduce undissolved oxygen in the permeate to less than 20 ppb O2.
- MOPS 170i: Pressure increase to pump the treated water into the district heat storage at a height of over 60 meters.
Benefits
The continuous operation of Mobile Water Solutions’ water treatment unit successfully met the project’s process capacity, quality, punctuality, and cost requirements. This ensured the client’s objectives were achieved effectively and efficiently.
