Off-site resin regeneration across Europe

A resin regeneration network built for industrial operations

Mobile deionisation systems can produce the required demineralised water on site when fixed treatment capacity needs to be supplemented or replaced.

Where ion exchange resin is used, producing treated water is only one part of the process. Once exhausted, the resin must be regenerated before it can be used again. This regeneration stage is carried out at a dedicated regional regeneration centre, not at the customer’s operating site.

This means no acids or caustic chemicals are required at the customer’s site for resin regeneration, and the associated regeneration effluent is managed off site. For operations, maintenance, and environmental teams, this reduces the regeneration-related activities that must be accommodated on site.

For industrial customers, the value of this process also depends on where the regeneration centres are located.

A regional network places regeneration facilities closer to the operating areas it serves, rather than relying on a single central location.

Mobile Water Solutions, part of Nijhuis Saur Industries, manages a European ion exchange resin regeneration network comprising three dedicated centres. Together, they regenerated 8 million litres of ion exchange resin in 2025.

2025 regeneration activity across the European network

A regeneration network has value when geographic coverage is matched by real operating activity. 

In 2025, the three centres supporting the Mobile Water Solutions regional off-site regeneration network recorded the following completed regeneration volumes:

These figures reflect completed regeneration activity; they do not represent available capacity for an individual project. Asset availability and mobilisation depend on the operating requirements, location and agreed scope. 

Why the network spans three countries

The regional support is built around three dedicated regeneration centres in the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

The current footprint took shape between 2020 and 2021. Wissous was expanded in 2020, Heinsberg opened in May 2021, and the Stoke-on-Trent centre completed a major refurbishment in June 2021. 

Each centre was selected for the customer operations it was intended to serve, creating a practical regional structure for regeneration support:

  • Stoke-on-Trent for the United Kingdom and Ireland
  • Heinsberg for Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and northern France
  • Wissous for France and southern Europe

The regional structure also supports the equipment and services behind mobile ion exchange treatment. Heinsberg was established as an operating base, with facilities supporting resin regeneration, mobile treatment equipment, parts, and consumables.

Stoke-on-Trent is also the operating base for the UK Exchangeable Cylinder Service, which supports the exchange of ion exchange vessels and the off-site regeneration of their resin.

From the European network to the customer site
